Volta River Estates (VREL) was founded in 1988 and became the world's first Fairtrade banana hired labour producer. Today VREL is exporting over 10.000 tons of Fairtrade bananas yearly and employing 700 people. In 2022 USD 435.000 of Fairtrade premium was received and invested in local communities. The livelihood of over 4.000 (in)directly depends on VREL. At the end of 2019 VREL created Volta River Estates Europe B.V. (VREL Europe) in Barendrecht, Netherlands as their own (100% owned) import and trading company. VREL Europe markets the fruit of VREL to clients in Europe. Next to that, VREL Europe aims to trade in fresh produce from Europe to Africa and more varieties of fairtrade fruit from Africa to Europe.
