  • South Africa’s agricultural sector is a critical economic driver, contributing 2.4% to GDP and employing millions, but it faces interconnected challenges in water scarcity, energy reliability, and climate resilience. Agriculture consumes 61% of the country’s water and 2% of its energy, with 10% of all solar energy already used in the sector; yet post-harvest losses, regulatory hurdles, and smallholder farmer exclusion persist as barriers to growth. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Just Energy Transition aims to shift from coal to 22% renewable energy by 2030, with solar and wind playing a key role in both energy security and agricultural productivity.

The Netherlands, a global leader in sustainable agriculture, water management, and renewable energy, offers complementary expertise in precision farming, circular economy practices, and inclusive value chains, aligning with South Africa’s goals for climate-smart agriculture and food security. Dutch-South African collaboration is already advancing through public-private partnerships, green hydrogen projects, and agri-voltaics, with the Netherlands being South Africa’s top EU investor (17.7% of FDI) and a major market for its agricultural exports.
