AfrikaDag 2015

On Saturday 7 November it is time for the Africaday 2015! This special event will again take place in the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. The main guests are none other than Makthar Diop, World Bank Vice President for Africa, Bert Koenders, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, and Lodewijk Asscher, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Affairs and Employment.

This year, special attention will be paid to the role of ‘new players’ in Africa. China is the most well-known example, and her role in Africa will be extensively discussed during the day. However, the role of other countries, businesses and diaspora organisations in Africa will receive attention as well. In more than forty workshops, debates, lectures, interviews and presentations these and other themes will be explored. For example, Paul Tang (MEP for the PvdA) will participate in a debate about ‘Financing for Development’ with, amongst others, Makhtar Diop and Minister Ploumen. MsAfropolitan Minna Salami and Ikenna Azuike (What’s up Africa) will discuss the concept of afropolitanism. Former China correspondent Michiel Hulshof will, supported by a guitarist and a flutist, speak about Chinese cities in Africa and Andrew Makkinga will have a conversation with Lodewijk Asscher about racism in the Netherlands. The talk show Vice Versa Draait Door will offer space for controversial opinions, refreshing ideas and personal stories, that together shed a new light on actual themes like migration. Representatives of political parties will take part in the ‘Make taxes fair!’ debate about the question how we can create a fairer tax system in this world.

Of course, we also offer you a rich cultural programme. Trouw journalist Seada Nourhussen will interview different authors during this part of the programme. We are very proud to present that Vamba Sherif will present his latest novel De Zwarte Napoleon at the Africaday. During the iAfrica festival, organised by Yangambi, you can get in touch with Congolese music and art and also speak to the artists. Do you need some time to relax? No problem, also this year we will show two different documentaries about the presence of China in Africa. On our information market, you can find over twenty organisations that you can ask anything and everything. Furthermore, you can buy all kinds of African goods and treats here. Still not tired? After the closing reception in the Royal Tropical Institute, we will finish the day in style with the afterparty ‘Africa at Night’ in Amsterdam’s newest pop venue Q-Factory. Here you can enjoy a delicious African dinner and show your best moves during the performances of several musicians who will rip up the dance floor with their African vibes. We see you on the 7th!
